What is propane used for?

Propane is more commonly known as liquefied petroleum gas or LPG or LP gas. It is a mixture of propane with smaller amounts of propylene, butane and butylenes. Propane also has ethanethiol added to make what is normally and odorless product to have a scent. Propane is used mainly as fuel in cooking on barbecues and portable stoves and in motor vehicles. Propane is also used to power buses, forklifts and taxis and is used for heat and cooking in recreational vehicles. Propane is also becoming a widely used fuel source in many rural areas of the United States to power home items such as furnaces, water heaters, laundry dryers, stoves and other heat producing appliances. In rural areas a delivery truck is used to fill large permanent tanks located on the home owners property. These tanks are sometimes referred to as Pigs.

Another use of propane is the application as propellant for aerosol sprays, especially after the ban of CFCs. It is also used as a feedstock for the production of base petrochemicals in steam cracking.
